Ortus started in our founder Cian Prendergast’s garage in Abbeyleix in 2007, where he and our Technical Director David Brophy slowly put together a new style of IT company.
Humble beginnings. A side-hustle that came from the deeply held belief that the IT marketplace in Ireland was fundamentally broken, that customers were being ripped off by liars and spoofers.
These IT companies lied in their sales pitch that they could provide proper Managed support and their spoofing revealed the grisly truth that they couldn’t do it.
It was the worst time to start a new type of business with Global markets crashing, but the aim of Ortus – then and now – was to bring honesty and transparency: to manage our customers’ outsourced IT in exactly the same way that we manage our own.
Many of our customers felt the pain of those empty promises from our rivals and lived through the torture of unsecure systems and a sticky plaster fix without any honest advice.
From those early days, Ortus has grown in two key verticals: Homecare and Nursing homes and Accountancy practices, both of which rely on having excellent, secure and efficient IT solutions.

Largely through word of mouth and top client referrals, Ortus has stuck to giving honest advice - even if it is not always what the client wants to hear – and can mean that they are perceived more expensive than rivals who don’t hit the same quality levels.
Our people are at the heart of our success: quite simply, they are the best. We only hire Tier 2 staff who then train for six to twelve months before going onto the customer-facing support desk. They are smart, hungry and humble with great communication skills. We encourage continual training and urge them to do as many courses as they can, which we pay for.

Our staff are well-paid, better than others in the IT industry, and they work in offices with great camaraderie where their opinions are listened to: they have a voice and they understand and live the values of the company.
There are three core elements to the Ortus offering: Managed services with an outsourced support desk; tailormade cloud solutions (Microsoft Azure Gold Partners) and security (Sonicwall Gold Partner too), currently the most important aspect for customers.
We are in the top two per cent globally for how to run secure systems, which has become more important as Microsoft enforces the sort of strict rules that we have been following for more than two years. We have grown from six employees to 24 over the past five years and I can see us growing to 50 employees in the next five years as we become one of the Top 5 IT providers in the country.
Ortus believe that more and more companies will outsource their IT in the future, as they see the value and cost-efficiencies we provide. We will remain on top of and ahead of all tech developments to bring the best managed services for our customers.
